Flora and faunaThere is a very wide range of plant and animal species in the district.
Amongst plants, the species which are most abundant in the district are Kau (Olea cuspidata), Phulai(Acacia modesta), Sanatha (Dodones viscosa), Gurgura (Monotheca buxifolia), and Pataki (Gymnospo Riaroyleana).
The general vegetation consists of dry deciduous scrub. The grass species which are dominant in the area are Sariala (Heteropogan contortus), Khawi (Cymbopogan jwarancusa), Mesquite (Prosopis juilfloro), and Karir (Capparis sphylla). All these plant species are found throughout the district.
The species which exist in various areas of Chakwal district are:
- Grey partridge- found all over the district, especially in areas, which are sparsely populated.
- Black partridge- found along the seasonal channels and water holes in the bellas through out the district.
- Chakore- found in dry rocky areas in the district especially in the Choa Saidan Shah area.
- See See partridge- found at a number places in the district in the dry rocky area especially in the Kallar Kahar mountain belt leading into subdivision Talagang.
- Quail- found in the sandy areas of Lawa and Talagang during autumn and spring.
- Hobart bustard-a few birds have been spotted in the Lawa region.
- Common crane- lands at a number of places where water is present in sufficient quantities during the migratory period.
- Ducks- ducks of different species visit the district during winter though in very small numbers, mainly concentrating in the Kallar Kahar lake.
- Peacock- Kallar Kahar is famous for its peacocks, which roost on the pipal trees of the town. The Chakwal peacock, a spectrum of blue and green hues, belongs to the common Indian variety and is spread almost evenly in the Choa-Kallar Kahar belt.
- Urial- the urial is found in the mountain regions of Chakwal, Talagang and Choa Saidan Shah in a small number.
- Chinkara deer- a few chinkaras are reported to have survived in the Diljabba game reserve in Chakwal subdivision.
- Wolf- the survival of a few odd wolves in the Diljabba area has also been reported.
- Fox- fox can be occasionally seen in the Chakwal-Nila belt and in the less populated areas of Lawa
The total area of game sanctuary in district Chakwal is 138240 acres while the total area of games reserved is 291840 acres.
